Over 4 billion people are now online
According to a recent report by We Are Social and HootSuite, the total number of internet users around the world has grown to over 4 billion daily users. The world’s population currently sits around the 7.6 billion people mark, which means that over half of the population of the world is now online.
“The Digital in 2018 report highlights the continuing growth of the Internet and social media to individuals and businesses around the world. This dynamic has forever altered the customer journey as consumers, and B2B professionals increasingly conduct research, make buying decisions, seek support, and recommend brands online. To achieve competitive advantage, all executives must dive deep into digital now, meeting their customers where they are to best market, sell, and serve them,” Penny Wilson, CMO, Hootsuite.
Every day more people are coming online for the first time. Of the 4 billion internet users, over 250 million people used the internet for the first time in 2017. Add to that that the average internet user spends around 6 hours online a day, people will spend the equivalent of 1 billion years online in 2018. E-Commerce has also seen significant growth, reaching over US$1.5 trillion in 2017.
The writing is on the wall; if a business does not adapt to the digital world, they risk going out of business. We live in an age of convenience where the average person can get everything they need with just a few mouse clicks. Third party platforms like TripAdvisor have made it even easier for people to find what they are looking for. So to stay relevant, your business needs a robust digital presence. A decade ago all that meant was having a well-built website, but that is no longer the case. Nowadays, your business needs to be listed everywhere it can be; from Google My Business to any industry relevant third-party platforms.
